Bulky Waste Pickup - Keep our alleys clean

Friends and Neighbours,

The City of Winnipeg has a service that will pick up big items that often get left in our alleys and contribute to the mess and the fire safety issue. This service may be offered to residents of inner city neighbourhoods for free. Please spread the word.

Bulky waste pickup

Bulky waste is garbage heavier than 34 kilograms (75 pounds) or longer than 1.5 metres (5 feet) in any direction. Examples of bulky waste are:
- household furniture
- mattresses
- box springs
We collect bulky items according to the 5-day collection calendar.
We only collect bulky waste if you arrange for a special pickup. To request a pickup, contact 311 at least two full business days before your next scheduled collection day. For example, if your collection day is day 3, and your next day 3 collection is on a Friday, you need to call us before Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
You can have up to six items (any combination of bulky waste and large household appliances) picked up for each request.
A $20.00 fee may apply.
To cancel a bulky waste pickup, contact 311 at least two full business days before your scheduled pickup date. For example, if your pickup is booked for Thursday, you need to call us and cancel before Monday at 4:30 p.m.
If you have booked a pickup and you do not cancel within two full business days' notice, or you do not leave the items out for pickup, we still charge the fee.
If your scheduled collection day has passed and your bulky waste has not been collected, contact 311.
You may also take bulky waste directly to Brady Road Landfill for disposal. There is afee per vehicle.

Ross House Museum Canada Day Celebration

The Ross House Museum (140 Meade St. North) will be celebrating Canada Day with festivities beginning at 10:30 am this coming Friday, July 1st.

10:30 - Bannock Breakfast
Noon - Flag Raising, O' Canada
1 pm - BBQ & Cake

Special guest Robert Nolin, a Metis Elder, will provide a camp site interpretation. Also, there will be a replica Red River cart on site.

Celebration will continue until 3pm, or until the food runs out...whichever comes first!

Strategic Plan

The Point Douglas Residents Committee recently engaged in a comprehensive

strategic planning process that included:

• Board Governance training;

• Developing a plan for community, stakeholder and partner consultations;

• A review of PDRC’s by-laws, vision and mission statements and other documents;

• A review of current programs and areas of work;

• Facilitated community, board, partner and stakeholder consultations;

• Development of a 5-year strategic plan complete with risk analysis and an implementation framework that defines governance and operational tasks for the organization.

The resulting strategic plan incorporates PDRC’s ongoing work and commitment to the

Point Douglas community, as well as its plans for the future. It reflects the results of

broad based community consultations and is the product of a strong collaboration

between the staff and board of the PDRC and an external consultant. The PDRC

strategy was developed with a number of key stakeholders in mind and the process

helped the staff and board to clarify both organizational strengths and weaknesses

while charting the future direction of the organization. This strategy is meant to be a

living plan - flexible, responsive to the community and regularly reviewed and/or revised by the PDRC.

Bike to Work Day Winnipeg

This Friday, June 24th the PDRC will be operating a bike to work day pit-stop at the trail entrance on Annabella near Higgins from 6:30-9 am.

Highlights from the North Point Douglas Neighbourhood Housing Plan 2011-2016

The North Point Douglas Neighbourhood Housing Plan was revealed at the PDRC AGM on Sunday June 26, 2011!

In 2002, North Point Douglas was classified as a Housing Improvement Zone. As such, funding for housing was allotted to the neighbourhood, providing a five year neighbourhood housing plan was created.

The first plan was produced in 2003 and the updated plan remains true to the original vision for North Point Douglas; it is committed to building a safe, clean and stable environment for all who have chosen to live and work here. The PDRC partnered with NECRC (North End Community Renewal Corp) to update the housing plan along with Scatliff + Miller + Murray, a local planning and landscape architecture firm. Community consultations took place in November 2010 and a survey was distributed in the area with 100 people responding. The PDRC volunteer Housing Committee was an integral part of the planning process, providing valuable feedback when needed.

Not only does the new plan contain updated housing priorities and projects, it also provides information on the 33 initiatives established in the previous plan as well. From 2011-2016, the PDRC will focus on improving and maintaining the housing stock in the neighbourhood while supporting a diversity of housing options to serve a diverse population; apartments, cooperatives, pocket suites, quality rooming houses, rental units and multi-family developments in particular. Advocacy is an important aspect of the plan and is crucial in its successful implementation.

The new housing plan will ensure that housing in North Point Douglas continues to improve and meet the needs of neighbourhood residents. For more info or to check out the plan contact the PDRC or click here.
